Foot Orthotics

Definition of a foot orthosis

A foot orthosis is a medical device designed to either support and align the foot, to prevent or correct foot deformities, or to improve the functions of the foot.

Functions of a custom made foot orthosis ( orthotics )

            -         Provides a maximal and even distribution of the weight-bearing forces over the entire sole of the foot.

-         Reduces stress and strain on foot, ankle, knee, hip, and spine by properly controlling the eversion and inversion of the sub-talar joint and pronation and supination of the transverse tarsal joint, and by absorbing part of the ground reaction forces as well.

-         Provides relief for sensitive and painful areas of the sole such as atrophic, scarred, calloused, and ulceration areas.

-         Supports the longitudinal and transverse arches of the foot.

-         Relieves metatarsalgia causes e.g. subluxation and dislocations of MP joints, Morton’s neuroma, March fracture, sesamoiditis.

-         Controls the foot by decreasing the amount, degree, and rate of pronation of the foot in walking and running.

-         Help to correct abnormal foot positioning.

-         Provides accommodation for the foot with missing parts caused by congenital anomalies or amputation.

-         Equalizes leg length discrepancy by bringing the foot to the ground.

-         Limits the motions and weight-bearing stresses of various symptomatic foot problems.

-         Minimizes the pressure and irritation from external (foot-wear) or internal sources (prominence).
